The more that I read about Amsterdam, the more I'm determined to move there. Is marijuana legal? Check. Is gay marriage legal? Check. Fast internet? Check. Primary modes of transportation are bicycles and small boats, meaning less pollution and less costly than filling up on non-renewable fossil fuels, and is also some good exercise. With 176 different nationalities, Amsterdam is home to a wider variety of nationalities than any other city in the world. I love how tolerant this place is, it seems like everyone is welcome there. Hockey? Check. Baseball? Check.I need to go brush up on some Dutch.

My spring break was this past week, so I went home to Arkansas. I had a great time, I got to sleep in a little and spend quality time with my friends and family. I mainly did alot of work while I was there, whether it was just catching up on schoolwork or fixing up my parents computers or helping out around the houses. We went to my grandparents lakehouse for a few days which was fun as always. Rode the 4-wheelers around quite a bit, worked around the house, cooked some steaks, fished, all that good stuff. On the first night there I woke up at 5 in the morning and could barely breathe. I believe that I've developed an allergy towards something, although I'm not sure exactly what. I had a couple more similar episodes throughout the rest of the week. Could be pollen, or dustmites. Now that I'm back in Ann Arbor, I plan on cleaning my entire room from top to bottom to try to get rid of any potential allergens in the room. I would rather live in a place that doesnt make me feel miserable all of the time.I mentioned doing schoolwork during spring break, I'll elaborate. I decided it'd be a good idea to get ahead in my readings in my English class so that I could focus more on Organic Chemistry during these next few weeks. We're currently reading a book called "On Beauty", so I finished it. It's quite possibly the worst book I've ever read, and the reviews on Amazon.com seem to agree that it's not that great of a book.I'm excited, AFI (mah favorite band) is coming out with a new album this year, "Crash Love". Silly name, but I've loved everything they've made up to this point so I'm looking forward to it.There's a online game that I enjoyed playing, called Tabula Rasa, and last night it shut down. I had talked about the closure of this game a while ago. I played up until the moment that they turned off the servers. It was ridiculous, mass mayhem everywhere. It was an incredible game, and it's a damn shame that they gave up on it. R.I.P. Tabula Rasa, I dont regret a single minute that I spent playing you.

I had an excellent Valentine's Day. I got to spend some time with the girl that I like, which is always awesome. I even got a hug before she left. Got her a rose and some Korean candy, although I thought that it was Japanese candy at the time. She still thought it was delicious.Later on that night I went to my friend's apartment. We were hungry so I took him to the place where I bought that Korean candy. That's when I found out what language it was, because he had taken a few semesters of Korean, so he started speaking to the owner in that language to find out which of the dumplings he sold were the best. Before we left he gave each of us a free drink, something that his brother was the maker of, it was sweet and delicious. After my friend and I had eaten up all of the vegetarian dumplings, which were incredibly good, we went to Wendy's and I got a chocolate shake.I normally condone people for blogging about things like this, but I think that I'm putting on a little weight. Mah tummy's all flabby. I've mainly been working out my arms and legs lately and have forgotten entirely about the chest area. I gotta get back into the habit of having a daily pushup/situp routine. I should try doing the http://hundredpushups.com/ program again, it was working really well for me... until I got lazy >.<

"Dangers" of Marijuana, Pt. II
Wow, so my post about the "dangers" of marijuana ended up on the front page of Xanga.com! The responce was overwhelming, but I did get a chance to read through all of the comments and respond to most of them. It was great getting to hear about what the community feels about the issue. It's funny that out of ALL of the comments left, out of all of the people who claimed that marijuana made their friends and family stupid, there was not one single comment in which someone who was a previous marijuana smoker personally told me that they themselves had dropped out of school or were fired as a result of their abusive behavior with marijuana. Infact, quite the opposite, all of the people who admitted to having used marijuana, for medical reasons or otherwise, have shared their stories about how they or members of their families have used marijuana for medical purposes and it has helped them out a great deal. There were a few misconceptions that I didnt address in my post, so I'm going to clear them up right here.First and foremost, I'd like everyone to know that I dont smoke marijuana, and that I'm not a "pothead". It's obvious that smoking anything is bad for your lungs and your teeth, and since I hope to become a dentist someday it would be stupid for me to preach against smoking while I was a smoker. I do enjoy the occasional pot brownie, once a month at the very most, but marijuana is not a big part of my life. What I DO feel strongly about is the taxing and regulating of marijuana to help benefit this nation in the long run. Marijuana IS medically relevant, and allowing a safer alternative to alcohol and cigarettes to the casual drug user while taxing it would help our nation's economy. I dont experiment with random drugs, infact it was a very long time and I did quite a bit of research before I decided that marijuana was something that I'd be willing to try. I did the same thing with alcohol. To this day, I still do research on the effects of marijuana, and overall I've found it to be a significantly safer alternative to alcohol. Even then, I'll agree that marijuana is not for everyone. The first time that I tried marijuana was smoking it during my freshman year in college, and it was a horrifying experience for me. I had decided then and there that smoking was not something I wanted to do again, I did not enjoy the "high" that I got from that method. But, I was open-minded enough to know that different methods of injesting marijuana produce different types of "highs", and the high that I got from marijuana brownies was a much mellower experience. To anyone who read my previous entry who decided that they might want to try marijuana, the best advice I can give you is not to let yourself become peer pressured into anything that you dont feel comfortable with. Like I said, it isnt for everyone, and the people who are new to it should take caution the same way that you would the first time you tried alcohol.Marijuana is not addicting. There are no physically addicting substances in the plant. To say that marijuana is addicting because it's a drug would be a straight-up lie. Caffeine is infinitely more addictive, and that actually has physically addicting properties. Also, there is a big difference between "addicting" and "habit forming". Anything and everything has the potential for abuse, yet that shouldn't be an excuse not to legalize the drug. People abuse alcohol all the time, yet it would be silly to try to prohibit that again. Dont forget that prohibition causes violence, the demand for illegal substances creates a black market and subsidzes the gangsters who seek to profit off of it.Marijuana does not make you "dumb" or "lazy" or cause poor decision-making skills. There is no evidence to support either theory, passing the blame onto marijuana because someone you knew dropped out of school or got fired is simply not an option. There is a BIG dfference between being lazy and being relaxed. You cant blame the drug for a change in a person's personality, there's no correlation. Also, marijuana does not affect your coordination, memory, or reaction time. There's the possibility of slight short-term memory loss while a person is under the influence, but that's not nearly to the effect as the way that alcohol affects the memory, and marijuana certainly doesnt affect your long term memory. It's also incorrect to assume that marijuana affects a person's attitude towards life, there's just no scientific backing to these claims. There was a big worry about how the legalization of marijuana would affect the # of DUI incidents. The fact is that over 50 million Americans are already using marijuana, and if there was a threat to be had regarding driving under the influence of marijuana, it'd have shown up by now. Somewhere, anywhere. Yet it hasnt, the truth is that marijuana affects the brain COMPLETELY different than the way that alcohol does. That's not to say that I advocate driving under the influence of any substance, but marijuana will certainly not contribute to DUI deaths. If anything, DUI deaths will decrease, all current studies have shown that drivers under the influence of marijuana drive better than their sober counterparts, and I can imagine that several people will find marijuana to be a safer alternative to alcohol. Read for yourself http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/Misc/driving/dot78.htmThe myth that marijuana is a gateway drug is an age-old theory that has been repeatedly and soundly debunked. Science has repeatedly confirmed that it's simply untrue. Unless a majority of the people who use marijuana go on to try harder drugs, the theory is just a theory. But no, only 1 in 104 marijuana users will ever go on to even attempt cocaine. Also, marijuana does not cause cancer or schizophrenia. There is no scientific evidence to support these claims. You cant find a single case of lung cancer or brown-lung in a marijuana-only smoker, they simply dont exist. Infact, there's even grounds to believe that marijuana reduces the rate at which cancerous tumors develop. Also, dont forget that you dont have to smoke marijuana, there are many many methods in which you can ingest the THC compounds. It's true that marijuana can provoke the effects of schizophrenia in persons who have a genetic disposition for the disease, but then again so can alcohol. But it does not CAUSE schizophrenia, if it did then we'd have millions and millions of schizophrenics. Also, it's been proven that the THC compounds in marijuana helps fight against alzheimer's, moreso than any other drug currently on the market. To say that marijuana doesnt have a place in medicine would be ignorant and completely untrue.Recently there has been a big stink surrounding Michael Phelps being photographed taking a hit out of a bong. It's been incredibly controvercial, and a hot topic of discussion on Xanga. A couple of people have asked me in the comments what I thought about the incident. And I say, HORRAY! How can you argue that marijuana makes you lazy when the guy won 12 GOLD MEDALS. The fact that Michael Phelps smokes marijuana does not surprise me at all. It's interesting to note that Phelps went to University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the same school that I'm currently attending. I'm not surprised at all that Phelps smoked weed, because Ann Arbor is famous for it's lenient marijuana laws. So long as you're in Ann Arbor, if you're caught smoking marijuana in public, the worst that can happen for first-time offenders is a $25 fine as a misdemeanor. As a result, alot of people smoke marijuana here, it's everywhere.I'm not some stoner who's fighting to get marijuana legalized because it's fun to get high. That's only the tip of the iceberg. My previous entry had nothing to do with why it should be alright for the casual user to use marijuana, I merely focused on the aspects of how taxing and regulating marijuana would help to fix our nation. I covered pretty much everything else in my previous entry, but I didnt mention my thoughts on how doing so would help fix our economy. Let's consider the fact that if all of the non-violent marijuana users were released from prison, we wouldnt have to spend our tax dollars feeding and housing a population of people that dont contribute to the economy. Then, when those people go home to their friends and family, there's going to be a party on every neighboorhood block. Now, if marijuana is legalized, everyone and their grandmother will be waiting in lines a mile long to buy the first legal retail cannabis. That in itself is tax-dollar bling bling, people will be loading up on the stuff, then there'll be a steady tax income for quite some time. Even then, consider what we'd do with the $10 billion that we spend on the prohibition of marijuana ALONE annually. We could put that money to a whole slew of new uses, such as trying to prohibit the hard drugs that actually harm people. Also, since I got put on the front page of Xanga, I've had a whole wave full of new subscribers to my blog. I'll subscribe back to some of you, but I cant guarantee that I'll do so for everyone. I've already got a whole bunch of people that I'm subscribed to already, so it takes me a long time to read through my blog subscriptions every day. That being said, I'd love to subscribe back if you're a person who's actually interested in my blog. But, I wouldnt feel too terrible if anyone unsubscribes because my blog is so boring, so dont feel guilty for unsubscribing. I dont do a whole lot of pro-marijuana activism, this was a one-time thing and for the most part my blog is just boring daily-life stuff that I like to blog about, so heed that warning. Like the organic chemistry exam that I took last Tuesday, I like talking about stuff like that. Actually, wait, no I dont, let's not talk about that exam, that didnt turn out so good. -
The "Dangers" of Marijuana
Marijuana. Why is it illegal? Is it because it kills so many hundreds of thousands of people every year? No, it cant be that, it’s nontoxic. It’s main chemical component, tetrahydrocannabinol, cannot cause death via overdosage. Infact, there hasn’t been a single reported cause of death that was due to the result of marijuana. None, nada, 0, zip. On the other hand, approximately 50,000 people die each year from alcohol poisoning, and more than 400,000 deaths annually are attributed to smoking tobacco, yet these are both legal drugs. One of these things is not like the other, can you guess what it is? There are also no addictive compounds in marijuana. Short term side effects may include pain relief, increase in appetite, protection against malignant tumors, getting people high… sounds like a couple of those things could potentially be medically relevant. Long term side effects include… oh wait, there are none. Marijuana is very helpful in relieving the pain that many terminally ill patients deal with, particularly in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy who are constantly nauseous and have lost their appetite. Smoking anything is bad for your lungs, although marijuana smoke is considerably less harmful than that of tobacco, but who says you have to smoke marijuana? You can also vaporize it, meaning you only inhale the non-harmful vapors of the plant, and since THC is fat-soluble you can also bake it into a wide variety of foods and drinks including but not limited to brownies, cookies, lollipops, and tea.
The sad thing is that the absolute worst thing that can possibly happen to a marijuana user… is getting caught. The physical and psychological torture that the user and their families go through during the legal process and time in jail does infinitely worse damage than had the user just been allowed to enjoy the plant. These non-violent people are being thrown behind bars where they risk being shanked and raped by problematic and violent prisoners on a daily basis.
On the industrial side, hemp produces a higher yield-per-acre than cotton, and requires very few pesticides. It’s growing cycle is only 100 days long, and it leaves the surrounding soil nearly weed-free for the next crop season. Hemp is STRONG too, some of the hemp shirts found in ancient Egyptian times are barely worn out at all. Sick of wearing holes through your socks? Hemp socks may be the last pair you ever buy. Legalizing the production of industrial hemp would create a billion dollar industry right here in the US, providing jobs for hundreds of thousands of Americans. And no, you cant get high off of industrial hemp, yet it’s still illegal. The reason why marijuana initially became illegal was mostly in part of one man’s attempt to rise to power by taking advantage of the white man’s racial fears: Harry J. Anslinger, who held office as the Assistant Prohibition Commissioner in the Bureau of Prohibition before being appointed as the first Commissioner of the Treasury Department's Federal Bureau of Narcotics. Don't believe me? Here’s a few very "colorful" quotes from the man himself!!!
Another common problem in our society is that many people disapprove of the usage of marijuana because either 1) they used it and became dependant upon it because they’re naturally susceptible to substance abuse, so because they went to rehab or had problems with it, they believe it’s not right and should be banned for everyone or 2) someone knows someone else who used pot, and they ended up dropping out of school or getting fired or being kicked out of their house, and they assume that marijuana makes people lazy (cue the derogatory term “pothead”) when in reality, the truth is that that individual has always been lazy and it was bound to happen eventually while the truth is that most marijuana users are very prominent members of society and rank from the dropouts who live in their parents basement all the way up to the President of the United States or 3) they’ve been brainwashed to believe whatever they’ve been told their entire life and thus believe that marijuana is a drug in the harmful sense (like cocaine, heroin, etc) when in reality, tetrahydrocannabinol should be treated more along the lines of drugs like the caffeine that’s in your colas and coffees.
There’s something seriously wrong with the fact that the US considers marijuana to be a Schedule 1 drug, meaning that it’s “considered to be potentially addictive with no current medical use”. This puts marijuana in the same category as heroin. Hell, cocaine is a Schedule II drug, that's definately not safer than marijuana! Even former DEA Chief Administrative Law Judge Francis L. Young said that "marijuana did not meet the legal criteria of a Schedule I prohibited drug and should be reclassified", describing marijuana as "...one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man." Many will think that marijuana is a drug in the sense that the human body wasn’t built to ingest the tetrahydrocannabinol chemical that exists within the plant, but if that were the case then why do our brains have cannabinoid receptors designed specifically for the usage of this chemical? Marijuana is a natural plant that grows on it’s own without the need to add extra chemicals in order to make the drug work.
Why do taxpayers here in the US pay $10 billion annually for the prohibition of marijuana ALONE? Why are more than 872,000 individuals arrested for non-violent possession and distribution of this innocent herb? That’s a far higher number than the total number of arrests for murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault combined. Shouldn’t our tax dollars be focused on getting rid of harmful drugs that destroy lives and create violent crime?
Let’s take a brief trip over to our friends over in Amsterdam, where marijuana is practically legal. Anyone over the age of 18 can legally purchase marijuana there in coffeeshops. With this abundance of legal marijuana floating around, it’s sure to fall into the hands of kids, right? Actually, the rate of teenage pot users is half of that of here in the US. Wait, that doesn’t make sense... surely this isn’t right. There’s more. Even their hard-drug usage rates as well as overall crime rates are lower, including violent crimerates, all of these things are lower than they are in the US. The US has the toughest anti-marijuana laws in the world, yet we STILL have the most drug-users in the world. We’re the ones who are growing and importing all the marijuana that we smoke, we aren’t exporting it.
Plain and simple, marijuana should be taxed and regulated. The D.A.R.E. anti-drug programs that my generation grew up with have undeniably FAILED, the war on drugs in America has FAILED, and too much of OUR tax dollars are being wasted every year putting non-violent users behind bars and ruining the lives of them, their families, and their friends. Let businesses grow it in an environment that can be monitored and controlled by the FDA, creating jobs and boosting the economy in the process. Just take a look at what happened when alcohol was prohibited. During those 13 years, violent and non-violent crimes skyrocketed, alcohol use skyrocketed, and death skyrocketed. You could never be certain what someone put into that moonshine that you were drinking. When the prohibition was repealed, crimerates dropped immediately and significantly. By creating a prohibition, it’s inevitable that a black market will be created for that substance, and doing this only subsidizes the gangsters who are eager to make tons and tons of money out of it.
Prohibition doesn’t work, America has more pot users than ever, and there is nothing that can stop us. Now more than ever, the nation’s marijuana users are pressing and fighting the issue. It’s silly to fight so hard against something so harmless when all of the money that is spent trying to uphold the prohibition of marijuana is being wasted. Let’s regulate it, tax it, put an age limit on it, attempt to undo the damage that we’ve done so far and make life better for everyone. -
And while the world is still young, I can still hope for and imagine the day in which humankind rises above the social limitations of race, gender, religion, language, and sexual preferences; that we may stand up and see what lies beyond the horizons of the stars and below the deepest crevices of the oceans in a world that is no longer plagued by war, hatred, arrogance, and ignorance.

This has been a pretty good weekend so far. I got done what I wanted to accomplish, which was to get caught up in Organic Chemistry. I stayed up late Saturday night studying and then I spent all day Sunday working on it. By the time I was finished studying both nights, my brain felt like mush. But that's good, now that I'm caught up I'm ready to take on another week of lectures.Took my Spanish exam on Thursday, cant be sure how I did. Here's hoping for the best though. There's this girl I've been trying to get to know better. She's uber-cool, infact she's probably too uber-cool to go out with a wallflower like me. The problem is that I'm really shy around people I dont know that well, I dont know what to talk about. I just hope I'm not bugging her, I'd hate to make her Valentine's Day awkward. I'm an utter failure when it comes to meeting and wooing the opposite sex. But my hopes are high, if I'm not optimistic and I never try then I'll never get a girlfriend, and I'd like to have a meaningful more-than-friends relationship for once in my life.

The best thing about the clearance rack at Meijers is the discounted canned goods. Spaghettio's with sliced franks for $0.62? Fuck yeah I'll take that, I've never tried it before but it's cheap. Boo-hoo, someone dropped it so the can's dented, it's not like I give a fuck.Great, I have a Spanish exam today. Just wonderful. Bleh.

Woohoo, Obama! Yes we can... get Bush out of the White House!!I celebrated MLK day the same way that every other white man in the country did... listening to "I Have a Dream" and then spending the rest of the day awkwardly calling up all of my black friends to see how they've been. Just kidding.Organic chemistry is tough but I'm plugging along.I found a new genre of music that I thoroughly enjoy, "Space music", defined as "music that evokes a feeling of contemplative spaciousness." Good stuff, I can listen to it all day and not get tired of it.On Friday I installed and played some computer games. First up was Call of Duty: World at War. I had already played through the single-player game which was pretty lackluster, but this time I played the multiplayer quite a bit. I'm enjoying it alot, I'm already lvl42. Another game I played was Mirror's Edge. It came out a few months ago for Xbox 360 and PS3 and I dont have either of those so I didnt get to try the game out until now, it was released for PC just a few days ago. I was really looking forward to this game being excellent, but the control responce is horrendous and to top it all off, the game is very short. When the controls work, the game is pretty good. The music, the graphics, and the storyline are all top-notch. But gameplay is priority #1 for me, and even the best music, graphics, and storyline cant make up for the fact that the game is too short and has control issues. I've also picked up Kingdom Hearts again, that was one of my favorite games during my teenage years. I beat it 6 times. Although this is the 7th time, it's been a really long time since I've played it so I'm still getting used to it again.
